For educators, Twitter chats can be great virtual meetups to network, learn strategies from other teachers and leaders, share helpful resources, and spend time thinking about the latest topics, challenges, and innovations in education.
ASCD’s Educational Leadership magazine hosts an hour-long #ELMagChat on the third Wednesday of most months to discuss the themes and topics highlighted by our current issue. Many of our authors choose to join in, so it can be a great chance to “meet” them and ask questions about their articles. In May, for example, we discussed “Social Justice in Schools” with authors including Erica Buchanan-Rivera and Jasmine A. Coleman.
If you are interested in participating, but aren’t entirely sure how these chats work, here are some tips to participate.
Mark Your Calendar
Our chats take place from 5 to 6 p.m. PT/8 to 9 p.m. ET on the third Wednesday of most months. (We take some months off—you can always check our Twitter account @ELmagazine for the latest details). The hashtag to follow the conversation is #ELMagChat.
Find the Chat on Twitter
When it’s almost time for the chat, log in to Twitter and search for the hashtag #ELMagChat. Follow along on the “Latest” tab.
Introduce Yourself
We love to see who is tuning in and where you are from, so feel free to introduce yourself at the start of the chat.
Follow the Conversation
Editors from @ELmagazine will ask questions throughout the hour to get the conversation going. Read along and join in on whatever questions speak to you the most. You can also participate by liking other people’s responses and replying to them. You may have to refresh your stream as the conversation continues to see the latest responses.
Join the Chat
When you want to join the conversation, you can reply directly to each tweeted question or start a new tweet referencing the question. For example, if you’d like to respond to the first question posted (Q1), your tweet should start with “A1” and end with the hashtag #ELMagChat so other participants can find it.
Follow the Feed
Can’t make it during the designated time? No problem! You can always check out the hashtag later to read through the conversation, respond to participants, and continue the discussion asynchronously. You’ll also find reading recommendations from our staff throughout the conversation you can come back to later.
Finally: Have Fun!
We hope you find something useful, share some advice, or meet a new contact. We look forward to seeing you at a future chat.
